Infectious Diseases

This field of research encompasses epidemics and pandemics, as well as the intricate fields of mapping, modeling and prediction, infectious disease epidemiology involves the complex interplay between pathogens, human behavior and the environment.

Areas of Focus

  • HIV/AIDS
  • Outbreaks, Epidemics & Pandemics
  • Mapping, Modeling & Prediction
  • Social Networks
  • Spatial Epidemiology

As infectious diseases continually shape our world, the study of outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics has emerged as a critical field of research. Investigating the dynamics of these events, Brown researchers seek to unravel the factors that contribute to their emergence and understand the mechanisms of their rapid spread.

By examining disease outbreaks, such the ongoing spread of HIV/AIDS or the recent Ebola, Zika and COVID-19 epidemics, researchers gain insights into the behavior of pathogens and refine strategies for early detection, containment and prevention.

Brown University researchers develop strategies to detect, contain and prevent outbreaks of infectious disease and explore the intricate patterns of disease through social networks and spatial epidemiology. With these approaches, researchers can develop accurate predictive models, enabling proactive measures to combat infectious disease and safeguard global health.
